My classroom practice is rooted in the TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication-Handicapped Children) framework. I believe that for neurodivergent learners, 'structure is a bridge to independence.'
Visual Schedules & Transitions I implement individualized visual schedules to provide students with a clear 'road map' of their day. By transitioning from teacher-led instructions to visual cues, I help students reduce performance anxiety and navigate the school day with confidence. Whether using 'First/Then' boards or complex digital timetables, my goal is to give every student the predictability they need to thrive.
Purposeful Workstation Structure I design physical learning environments that minimize sensory distractions and maximize focus. My workstations are structured to answer four critical questions for the student:
What work am I doing?
How much work is expected?
When am I finished?
What happens next?
By using clear 'left-to-right' work systems and visually defined boundaries, I empower students to complete tasks autonomously. This approach not only builds academic skills but also develops the essential executive functioning and self-advocacy skills they need for life beyond the classroom.
In my experience, academic success is built on a foundation of emotional safety and self-regulation. I move away from traditional 'compliance-based' behavior management, focusing instead on teaching students the skills they need to recognize and manage their internal states.
The Zones of Regulation I am a specialist in implementing the Zones of Regulation framework. By categorizing complex emotions into four colored zones (Blue, Green, Yellow, and Red), I provide students with a simple, non-judgmental language to describe how they are feeling.
Green Zone: Optimal for learning.
Yellow/Blue Zones: Opportunity for early intervention.
Red Zone: High-intensity emotion requiring immediate sensory tools.
Proactive Toolkits & Sensory Support Teaching a student to identify their 'zone' is the first step; the second is providing the 'tools' to navigate back to the Green Zone. I work with students to develop personalized 'Regulation Toolkits' which may include sensory breaks, heavy work activities, deep pressure, or breathing exercises.
Positive Behavior Support (PBS) My approach is rooted in Positive Behavior Support (PBS). I view behavior as communication. By conducting functional assessments and understanding the 'why' behind a student's distress, I can adapt the environment and my own communication style to prevent escalations. This creates a classroom culture of empathy, where students feel understood rather than managed, leading to a significant increase in their availability for learning.
Effective inclusion is a multi-disciplinary effort. I pride myself on my ability to act as a bridge between the student, the family, and external specialists to ensure a '360-degree' support system.
Evidence-Based IEPs I have extensive experience in writing and implementing Individual Education Plans (IEPs). I don't believe in 'one-size-fits-all' documents; instead, I set SMART targets (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) that focus on both academic milestones and functional life skills. I use ongoing assessment data to ensure these plans are 'living documents' that evolve with the student’s progress.
Multi-Disciplinary Collaboration Throughout my career, particularly in specialist settings in the UK, I have worked alongside Speech and Language Therapists (SLT), Occupational Therapists (OT), and Educational Psychologists. I am adept at integrating their therapeutic goals into the daily classroom routine, ensuring that support is seamless and consistent rather than isolated.
Family Partnership I believe that parents are the experts on their children. I maintain open, transparent communication with families, providing them with the tools and strategies to support learning and regulation at home. By building this trust, we ensure that the student experiences a consistent approach across all environments, which is vital for reducing anxiety and maximizing potential.
